The old shambles and cattle yard below St Patrick's Cathedral, now a walled council market site of open yard and covered sheds. The variety market fills it twice a week with trestle stalls selling fruit and vegetables, fish, bakery goods, household goods, clothing and giftware. Part of it is under roof, so the market runs through the winter. On alternate Saturdays the yard is given over instead to a car boot sale, with trader spaces handed out first come, first served and a queue that starts forming well before dawn.
